Every summer, my parents rented a motor home, loaded the two kids and two great danes in, then set out an adventure. At the time, I couldn’t understand why I was being forced to spend time with the individuals I had been attempting to flee from on a daily basis. Not to mention being stuck in some studio apartment on wheels...far from appealing.

Each year, Dad picked an area of the country he felt like seeing. At first, we covered Wisconsin and I saw no point at the time. I mean, how many times can you see The Dells or Barabou? Cheese shops, glass blowers, and women dressed in glittery outfits on water skis? And it was only a few hours from home! Why be forced to sleep in the same room for weeks with these people? Couldn't I just go home and come back the next day? Okay. I admit it. I did like this Jellystone Park campground. Particularly because Boo-Boo The Bear visited me daily during movie night. And he brought candy! Perfect date if it wasn’t for all that musty, synthetic fur.

For years, these trips were my own private hell. But once we made it out to South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado, I fell in love with the West and started to understand my father’s mad explorations for the first time. Since then, I dreamed of seeing “The Big Trees” as I called them, but we never made it out to California.

I finally saw some big trees last summer. If you're going to ask me "what took so long?" I have no idea. I didn’t get to experience the really cool big trees that you drive through, but I did see a few little biggees in Big Sur. This was my first; Old Colonial at Phieffer State Park. I was so enthralled by this massive tree, that I sat under it for an hour and just stared up in awe. I'd catch myself saying "ooh and ah" to myself, more times than I care to admit. I would have stayed longer if it were not for Blue racing off after some rabbit. But you can bet I'll go back.

Happy pre-Christmas weekend to all!
