Actor Thomas Gibson, who starred in the ABC series "Dharma & Greg" and recently bought a house in San Antonio, has lost his beloved dog and is asking for help.

Gibson said his pet Jake, a mostly reddish brown border collie mix with a TV pedigree of his own, disappeared Sunday while staying at a relative's house in Balcones Heights (near the intersection of Babcock Road and Hillcrest Drive).

"While the family was running an errand, he must have jumped the fence," said Gibson, who appeared recently in the high-rated CBS miniseries "Category 6: Day of Destruction," on a phone call from Los Angeles, where he continues to work. "He's got more than a little Lassie in him, and we are sure he jumped the fence to come home to us and has lost his way."

Jake also has a TV background. He's the offspring of Maui, known best for playing "Murray the Dog" on the '90s romantic comedy "Mad About You." Though groomed to be Maui's replacement, Jake didn't make it into the spotlight because he was camera shy. Gibson and his family later adopted him.

Gibson said Jake has been "an unparalleled companion and protector to our family, especially our children: 5-year-old J.P., 2-year-old Travis and 9-month-old Agatha (whose crib he sleeps next to)." The youngsters and Gibson's wife, Cristina, who grew up in San Antonio, are sad over the dog's disappearance. She placed an ad in the San Antonio Express-News and has been checking animal shelters, humane societies and vets all week, he said. The family is offering a reward for the dog's return, Gibson said.

He added that he and his wife moved to San Antonio to be closer to her family. Besides, he said, it "is such a great place, plus I was never comfortable as a Spurs fan in Los Angeles." Anyone who has information about the dog can contact the family at....

They forgot to add a blurb about Jake's adopted mom and how she's going mad not knowing where he is. No matter. Jake knows.

A few strong leads came in from the article today. Four different people identified a dog resembling Jake, all in the same area. My hope's restored.

In case I'm M.I.A for a few days, there's a good chance I'm off to San Antonio tomorrow to find Jake.

Thanks to everyone for your support.
Keep the faith for Jake.
